In Mississippi, a new law purports that “Conception Begins at Erection.”

In Chapter 38 of the Book of Genesis, we are told the story of Onan, who at the time refused to consummate his marital obligations at the time. Instead of having relations, he chose instead to “spill his seed upon the ground” rather than complete relations with his wife. It did not go well for Onan. Read Genesis 38 and see all the gory details.

Since then, the term “Onanism” is sometimes used to describe either masturbation or coitus interruptus. And some religions have used what they call “The Sin of Onan” as a rebuke of any form of birth control or contraception.

We now fast forward to today. In Mississippi. Because, sure, we do.

In the wake of laws that prohibit abortions in some states – and some other laws that even restrict contraception in some states – we now have a state bill in Mississippi that would actually charge a man with breaking the law – and I’m quoting here – “It shall be unlawful for a person to discharge genetic material without the intent to fertilize an embryo.”

The bill, presented in the Mississippi State Legislature by state senator Bradford Blackmon, imposes fines upon violation, including up to $10,000.00 for a third violation. Here’s the story from station WLBT.

Apparently Blackmon’s argument is that the laws on reproductive rights currently apply only to women, while a man for whatever actions he undertakes. Here’s a link to the bill itself, which if it passes into law, would take effect in July of 2025.

Well, isn’t THIS interesting.

Now I don’t know if this bill will even see a floor vote, or if any one will even co-sponsor this little project. But still … think of where this can go. Or not go.

And before anyone says, “Hey, wait a minute, you can’t legislate what a man does with his body, that’s not right,” – I would argue, “Well then, why are there so many laws and restrictions about what a WOMAN does with HER body? Fair is fair, right??”

I mean, I don’t want to be a complete jerk about it, and I certainly don’t know what kind of stroke anyone would have in the Mississippi State Legislature … but honestly, something tells me that laws like these are just complete boners. And enforcing them would be a stiff proposition.

Yeah, you saw what I did there.
